Thanks to Pierce Transit and a grant from the Washington State Department of Transportation, 500 of our high school students will receive their own Orca Youth Card preloaded with $10.

Orca Youth Cards can be used for rides on Pierce Transit, Sounder Trains, the Link Light Rail and more.

The “Find Your Freedom” grant program funded 5,500 Orca cards for high school students in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties. Of the 5,500 cards, 500 will be put in the hands of Bethel students.

Pierce Transit’s Sharon Stockwell said even the $5 cost of the card can be a barrier for some students, so the hope is that the preloaded cards will help students explore the sound, get to and from a summer job, or even to a Mariners game.

Distribution of the cards began through our Special Services department and continues through our McKinney-Vento liaison and our high school counselors.

The Orca cards are valid as youth cards through 2021 so students will be able to reload them until then.
